Participatory Video is a film production technique, which uses a processes of participation and sharing of the audiovisual language, through activities that involve a group or a community, in the production of a documentary.
The shared path of video production arises from reciprocal and horizontal interactions, from the encounter between researchers / filmmakers and participants and produces novel looks, images from reality, narratives and self-representations, in an ever new and unexpected individual and collective “phenomenology” of original tales and personal stories.
Participatory Video can be used with different approaches and methodologies, involving groups and communities in the preparation and creation of their own film, where the protagonists become authors of the narrative itself. It’s a type of a bottom-up audiovisual communication and at the same time a social action: a way to provide the expressive potential to marginalized communities and social groups who are excluded from the forms of communication thus becoming active and creative subjects of contents.
The association 4Caniperstrada has conducted visual research experimenting an original language of film narration and it uses participatory approaches for the production of documentaries with young people, migrants and refugees, fishermen, groups and communities in general.
